BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi yesterday warned that if advisers use their authority to influence the electoral field in their favor, it would raise serious questions about the neutrality of the interim government.
"One adviser instructed the Superintendent of Police in Cumilla — his own area — to arrest BNP leaders. An adviser's responsibility is to act impartially. How can they ensure a free and fair election if they behave this way?" he said.
Rizvi made these comments during a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Mohila Dal at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of party founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.
"Advisers must stay neutral. But if, instead of maintaining neutrality, they start using state power to build an electoral field for themselves, won't that raise questions? Of course it will," Rizvi added.
